Shiny versus Matte Inflatables: An Interesting Comparison for Looners Who Cannot Choose
One of the most overlooked choices when buying an inflatable is also one of the most important ones:
Do you go shiny or matte?
At first glance, it might seem like a purely cosmetic choice. After all, the shape stays the same, the size stays the same, and the amount of air inside certainly doesn’t change (that would be interesting, right?!👀)
But anyone who has spent time around inflatables knows that’s not the whole story.
The finish of an inflatable affects how it looks, how it feels, how it photographs, and even how it behaves during interaction. For many of us in the looner / balloon community, that difference can completely change the experience🤗
Two sides of the vinyl sheet
Most PVC inflatables are manufactured from vinyl sheets.
What many people don’t realize is that these sheets often have one shiny side and one matte side. During manufacturing, the chosen side is placed outward, determining the final appearance of the inflatable.
If you’ve ever considered ordering a custom inflatable, you’ve probably encountered this option.
In fact, when designing a custom toy, the manufacturer will often ask whether you want a shiny or matte finish (but if not asked, you could get ending up with sth you don’t like!). Depending on the factory and material used, this choice can even influence the final price. Keep that in mind when ordering a custom toy 😉
Shiny seems to dominate the market…or does it?
Once you start paying attention, you’ll notice that many inflatables are shiny.
Some manufacturers strongly favor one finish over the other depending on the price. The finish looks more appealing to me, but that’s personal preference.
Shosu, for example, almost always chooses shiny finishes for its inflatables. Their products are known for that glossy, reflective look that immediately catches the eye.
IW, on the other hand, offers both matte and shiny products. That flexibility allows them to appeal to a wider variety of preferences within the community.
And honestly, that’s a smart approach.
Because when it comes to shiny versus matte, there isn’t really a wrong answer.
There is only personal preference, like I mentioned earlier.
Is shiny also more sexy for a toy?
Let’s be honest:
There is something about shiny PVC that you cannot avoid looking at.. 🔥
Light reflects across every curve and seam. The surface appears smoother and deeper.
Many looners are already familiar with this attraction from other parts of the hobby: Latex balloons have it and latex clothing has it too and yes freshly inflated PVC often has it.
That reflective surface creates a sense of tension and fullness that our brains seem to love.
The visual impact can be enormous. I’m loving both, but at guilty pressure we almost used shiny inflatable for every video (with some exceptions).
Sticky vinyl can hurt your skin🤕
Interestingly, the difference isn’t only visual.
It can also be physical.
Shiny PVC often develops much more skin adhesion during use.
When your skin becomes warm, moisture builds up, and suddenly you feel yourself sticking to the surface.
Sometimes quite dramatically. It’s not like it hurts that bad, but it can be inconvenient af🙀
Stepping off a large shiny inflatable can occasionally create a surprising amount of resistance. In some situations, it can even be slightly uncomfortable as your skin pulls away from the vinyl.
Matte inflatables generally don’t have this effect to the same extent.
Their surface texture creates less adhesion, making movement feel smoother and easier.
Some riders love the sticky, grippy feeling of shiny PVC. Others prefer the freedom and comfort of matte surfaces.
Neither is wrong.
They’re simply different experiences.
Turning your matte inflatable into a shiny one
Sounds impossible? Nope! At least visually it is possible in quite a fun way😏
Many looners have discovered that certain oils and lubricants can temporarily give a matte inflatable a glossy appearance.
The effect can be surprisingly dramatic.
A normally understated inflatable suddenly reflects light in a completely different way, highlighting every curve and contour.
If you’re curious about that topic, take a look at:
Using massage oil or lubricant with inflatables and balloonsWhat should you choose: shiny or matte inflatables to play around with?
The frustrating answer is:
Probably both.
Shiny inflatables offer visual drama, reflections, and that unmistakable PVC look that many looners adore.
Matte inflatables feel softer, more understated, and often more practical during long sessions.
Some people build entire collections around shiny toys (like Guilty Pressure🤍)
Others discover they keep returning to matte pieces because of their comfort.
And many of us end up appreciating both for different reasons.
Final Thoughts
The shiny versus matte debate has existed for years, and it’s unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
That’s because the choice isn’t really about vinyl.
It’s about what catches your eye, what feels right under your hands, and what sparks your imagination.
Whether you’re drawn to the deep reflections of glossy PVC or the subtle elegance of a matte finish, both styles have earned their place in the looner world.
The best inflatable isn’t necessarily the shiniest one.
And it isn’t necessarily the matte one either🤷🏽
It’s the one that keeps making you feel goed when you inflate, play and deflate your inflatable toy.
